Our Story

About us

Our mission

Saint Benedict’s Chapel is an ecumenical organization dedicated to serving Lubbock’s homeless, working poor, and food insecure. Rooted in service to Jesus Christ, Saint Benedict’s seeks to treat each guest with love and dignity.

What we do

We are, first and foremost, a church. Each Sunday, volunteers from partner congregations lead a worship service, fostering spiritual nourishment through prayer, communion, and fellowship.

As an extension of our commitment to serving God and neighbor, we provide free dinners Monday through Saturday. Our volunteers work faithfully to provide a safe, welcoming atmosphere for the 80-130 guests served daily.

Our history and organization

Father Barry Ferguson founded Saint Benedict’s Chapel in 2007 to offer free meals and spiritual support for Lubbock’s poor and homeless. Originally located on Main Street in Lubbock, Saint Benedict’s moved to its present location on Broadway in October 2009.

Saint Benedict’s Chapel operates under the direction of a Board of Directors.

St. Benedict’s Chapel,
Ivan Ponce de Leon

Spiritual & Program Director

Ivan Ponce de Leon was born and raised in Mexico City as the youngest of five brothers. During his second year of college, he met his beautiful wife Stefanie. She was working as a missionary at the time. As Ivan says, her beauty was the perfect excuse for him to go to Church, without realizing that it was there where he would get to know the passion of his life: Christ. God’s call to do mission work was such that Ivan quit college and moved to the US to go to seminary.

Ivan graduated from Sunset International Bible Institute in 2009. Afterward, he and his wife returned to Mexico where they were involved in mission work. Today, Ivan and Stefanie live in Lubbock, Texas with their two boys, Ethan and Eli. Ivan has a passion for incarnational ministry, to bring Christ’s Kingdom to people in tangible ways, and to move people from simply “going to Church” to “being the Church”. His ministry is rooted in loving and serving others.
